Attaching files

Attach your own files and screenshots to a question and have LOKI analyse them.

You can give LOKI files directly in the chat, for example a draft contract to summarise, a spreadsheet to analyse or a screenshot of an error message. LOKI reads the file for this chat only. It is not added to your organisation's documents; that is what the dashboard is for.

Start the chat first

Attach files in an open chat, not on the start page. Files attached on the start page are currently not sent. So first click New Chat or open an existing chat.

Attaching a file

There are three ways:

Click the paper clip (Attach file) at the bottom left of the input field and select one or more files.

Attached files appear above the text as small cards with a thumbnail or file icon. Use the × on a card to remove the file again. If the text field is empty, Backspace removes the most recently attached file.

Then write your question about it, for example “Summarise this contract in five points” or “What does this error message mean?”, and send it.

Allowed files

Each file may be at most 2 MB in size. The number of files is not limited.

No error message for files that are too large

Files over 2 MB or with a different extension are not attached, and no message appears. If no card appears after you select a file, the file is too large or has an unsupported format. Make it smaller or share only the relevant part.

You cannot attach audio or video files. To speak a question, use voice input.

How LOKI reads attachments

  • Images are looked at directly by LOKI. It can read text in them and describe the content.
  • All other files are converted into text by LOKI. Layout, embedded images and formatting are lost in the process.
  • With a cloud model that has a usage limit, LOKI reads at most the first 20,000 characters of each file and tells the model that the rest is missing. The local model receives the whole file.

If a file is too long for the model, the message “Message too long” appears. In that case, shorten the file or ask about individual sections.

Viewing sent attachments

Sent attachments appear above your message:

  • Images open in a large view with a click.
  • PDF and text files open in a preview.
  • Other files show their name and type as well as the Download button.

Close the preview with ×, with Esc or by clicking beside it.

How long attachments are kept

LOKI deletes attached files after a retention period, 90 days by default. After that, the attachment remains visible in the chat with its name and file type and is marked as “deleted”. If you open it, a note explains that the file was removed after the retention period expired. The answers LOKI gave about it are kept.
